Funding bid could transform city gateway

Regeneration of the city remains high on the council’s priority list and a significant bid for government funding could help us change the face of a key area of the city centre.

The council is applying for £20m of capital funding under the Government’s Levelling Up Fund which, if successful, would see the further transformation of our Northern Gateway.

A number of schemes are already underway or are in the pipeline in this area, which reaches from the train station into the heart of the city, including the refurbishment of the Newport Indoor Market and Market Arcade, the proposed creation of a co-working and incubator hub in the Information Station building and the provision of a new active travel footbridge between Devon Place and Queensway.

This additional money would be used to enhance the public realm – so when people arrive in our city they are met with a view that reflects quality of place, our ambitions, and is positive and welcoming for visitors and investors alike.
