New Leisure Centre

A new leisure centre is due to be built on a key riverfront site in the city centre providing state-of-the-art facilities for residents.

Newport City Council is also committed to ensuring that the new building is environmentally sustainable and meets the highest possible standards.

Cabinet gave the go-ahead for the exciting £20 million project early in 2021 following a positive response to a public consultation.

The leisure centre scheme has secured £7 million of the Welsh Government’s transforming towns funding which is focused on redeveloping and improving towns and cities.

It will also pave the way for the development of the existing leisure centre site for the building of a new college campus, close to the University of South Wales, creating a Newport Knowledge Quarter.

Coleg Gwent will move to a brand-new further education facility delivered under the 21st century schools and colleges programme.

Together, the new centre and the campus will represent a public-sector led, multi-million investment in Newport and the city centre, improving the lives of residents as well as bringing wider regeneration and economic benefits.

Final proposals and designs are now being worked on ahead of the submission of a full planning application which is expected later this year.
